For Alberta residents holding a Licensed Practical Nurse designation and actively working in the nursing field, opportunities exist to upgrade their skills and education. Athabasca University offers a Post-LPN Bachelor of Nursing degree, a four-year, 120 credit program.

This Canadian nursing degree is designed to educate practical nurses to the Registered Nurse level. Building upon existing skills, enrollees must have worked as an LPN for at least one year in a clinical setting. Additional requirements for admittance include basic CPR and Basic Cardiac Life Support training and a license from the College of Licensed Practical Nurses in Alberta. Students may be granted up to nine credits from prior LPN training toward their degree.

Recognizing that students remain actively employed as LPNs, the university allows students up to seven years to complete the Post-LPN Bachelor of Nursing degree by distance learning.
