A student may also apply the Certificate of General Studies toward the Bachelor of General Studies which can also be done through open learning. The Bachelor of General Studies consists of 30 credits of university and/or college courses. Applied studies make up 15 credits. These credits may be taken from fine art, performing art, technology and in some cases, education and administration.
The Bachelor of General Studies is a self-directed and designed degree. Universities offering a Bachelor of General Studies provide a learning outcome section, advising students of potential careers available to them. For example, a student interested in pursuing freelance writing would be advised to take a number of English courses, along with geography, humanities and language courses. The Bachelor of General Studies, which is a 3-year degree, is not designed to allow direct entry into graduate programs. Students who wish to apply to grad school programs will have to add an extra year of specialization to their Bachelor of General Studies to gain admittance. There are distance graduate programs such as the Master's of Interdisciplinary Studies that will accept the 3-year Bachelor of General Studies for admittance.
A 30-credit Certificate of General Studies is offered by Thompson Rivers University. Completed through Open Learning, the Certificate of General Studies is often used by students unsure of whether they wish to pursue a Bachelor's degree with a major or the Bachelor of General Studies. There are no time limitations to complete the Certificate of General Studies. Students, who due to previous academic standing, are unable to enroll in specific Bachelor programs, may use the Certificate of General Studies to gain admittance to other distance degrees through the Canadian Virtual University.
The Bachelor of General Studies degree consists of 120 credits, depending on the university. Open universities allow students to take six months to finish a 3-credit course and 12 months to complete a 6-credit or two semester course. As long as a student remains active and in good financial and academic standing, no deadlines for degree completion are given.
At Bachelor of General Studies involves:
Six credits of English at the university level
45 upper level credits, from years two and three of the degree
Of the 45 upper level credits, only 15 may be taken from the Applied Studies section, which includes fine arts, performing arts, technology and in some instances education and administration
69 elective credits, which may be taken in any form from years one, two and three of the Bachelor of General Arts program
The largest part of the Bachelor of General Arts is the electives section. Through the electives, students are able to self-direct their educational interests and career goals. Although there is no requirement, in the amount of first, second or third degree electives a student must take, some electives do have pre-requisites in the second and third years.
Enrolling in a distance Bachelor of General Studies is an exciting event! Admittance to a Bachelor of General Studies is available to students globally.
